EXHIBITION Fall/Winter 2011: Paintings by Jennifer Garant

Jennifer Garant

Jennifer Garant is one of the most recognized international artists, and is well known for her iconic Chefs, often found in fanciful cafes and settings. Her artwork adorns thousands of licensed products such as wine glasses, dishes and kitchen utensils, and are marketed in more than 50 countries. She was recognized in 2011 by the American Culinary Federation for her graphic art design contributions to the culinary arts. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Jennifer Garant's artistic career began at the age of three, when she started sketching on her closet walls with black markers. In second grade, she won her first poster competition.

Jennifer Garant began her formal art education in 1977 at the College of Marin near San Francisco, and continued her studies at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta. She won the Expo "89 Watercolor Competition held during the 1986 World Exposition in Vancouver. She also created the largest mural in North America for Vancouver General Hospital, which consisted of twenty-one panels, each fourteen feet high and thirty-six feet long.

The historic French atmosphere and language of two cities Garant loves - Quebec and New Orleans - has provided her with ample inspiration to design a wide variety of chefs who explode with exuberant charm and personalities. What it is fascinating about Garant's Signature Chefs is the detail she puts in their colorful outfits, cheese plates, wine bottles, fish dishes, flower arrangements and baguettes. Her chefs often gives you the impression that they are in their way to deliver their goods to your table. Vive la vie en rose!

Jennifer Garant's new works painted on heavy-weight French paper, using her special antique texturizing technique which gives the impression of an old painting, have just arrived for a limited exhibition at the Alicia Armstrong Galley.

Garant's work has been commissioned by collectors around the world, from public and private organizations to corporation and celebrities, and has been shown and collected by galleries throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Jennifer Garant and Alicia Armstrong are currently collaborating on a new card game which was invented by Armstrong and features the art of Garant on the playing cards.
